Aloha

Aloha,

I miss you all so much, I keep think about coming home and being with everyone, but have enjoyed being with my ohana here in Hawaii. 😊 I was visiting 2 of our recent converts, Jayann (13) Justino (10) and their little sister Jayzareen (7) and talking about when I come back to visit them. I cant even describe how excited they were. Justino and Jayzareen were surrounding me talking about going hiking and getting ice cream "youll have to come on a Friday because we have school but we are done at 2:15 so you can come at 2:20." I told them they might meet my brother and sisters and told them all about them. I said to Justino, "I think youll really like spending time with my 18 year old brother Jordan, hes cool." Justino said, "Hes cool?! Im cool too!!" He was so excited to have something in common. 😉

Sister Satame and I worked really hard this week, we walked a lot and visited a lot of our recent converts who are preparing to go to the temple, and many less actives, a lot of which came to church which is great!! Ive realized over my mission the importance of church attendance. The best analogy I hear for tge reason we need to go to church was told by Hyrum Smith (Whos talks I listen to over and over On my ipod THANK YOU DAD). He said they were surrounding a campfire and the man who was suppost to give a talk on the importance of church attendance took a hot coal out of the fire and set it on a cold rock outside of the fire. They all sat there for 20 minutes staring at this coal as it got darker and darker until it was black. Then he picked it up with his bare hands and tossed it nack into the fire until it turned bright again. "In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen." Haha I thought that was great, and I think about it a lot. I think all of us need the spiritual warmth that comes from church 😊

Some cute things from Sister Satame this week:
1 - We walked in the sun and she got sun stroke (my bad) and she slept for 10 HOURS STRAIGHT after a full night of sleeping, woke up and ate at about 7, then went back to sleep and slept through the whole night 😂😅
2 - We were sitting in the car getting ready to get out when she goes "1 2 3 set go!" It was really cute.
3 - Her life at home before her mission is stuff from a horror story, it always makes me cry thinking about how blessed I am and the family and parents I have hearing about her family. Last night she said to me after crying for a long time about how her Dad beats up for mom, "I dont like that. I love my mom." She is so strong and I know only a little bit about how hard it must be for her to be out here on her mission. I look up to her a lot because of that.

For P-Day today we hiked Diamond Head, a very famous hike with a beautiful view and Sister Satame barley made it. Highlights:
1 - Once we got to the top she wouldnt stand up to go back down for an hour. Eventually I convinced her with ice cream.
2 - While walking up to the hike through a tunnel cars drive through, a bus drove past us and she slammed herself against the side wall and screamed the whole time it passed us then collapsed into my arms, I honestly think she thought we were going to die.
3 - At one point, there was a tall field of grass on our side and I was a few feet behind Sister Satame and the Elders were a few feet behind me and we all watched as she stopped on the side of the road turned with her back toward the grass and literally just fall flat back into the weeds and disappear. No catching herself or checking for rocks, just "take me now world" 😂 Poor thing.
4 - As we were walking near the end of the hike I noticed she had her phone up by her ear. As I got closer she turned and looked at me and I askes what she was listening to. Then she put the phone next to my ear and I hear plain old apostate radio music coming out of the speaker and I turned to look at her and said "Ummm..." (She knows very well that is not okay). She casually looks at me, walks over to a big rock, sets the phone on the rock, and then starts running as fast as she can it down the hill. Hahahahahahaha what??? I am honestly a single mother.

This week one of the Elders in our zone announced that a new book on the history of the saints entitled, "Saints" was on the LDS media library app. I finished the whole thing in 4 days. I loved every page of it. I look up to Edward Partridge, Heber Kimball, Brigham Young and Wilford Woodruff so much as well as Jospeh Smith. They were the definition of valiant, I love everything about them all. I also liked this particular part:
"Brigham climbed with effort into the wagon and took a seat beside Heber. As the wagon rolled down the hill, Heber felt terrible about leaving his family when they were so sick. He turned to the wagon driver and told him to stop. “This is pretty tough,” he said to Brigham. “Let’s rise up and give them a cheer.”

Back at the house, a noise from outside startled Vilate out of bed. Staggering to the door, she joined Mary Ann and Fanny, who were looking at something a short distance away. Vilate looked too, and a smile spread across her face.

It was Brigham and Heber, standing in the back of the wagon and leaning on each other for support. “Hurrah! Hurrah!” the men cried, waving their hats in the air. “Hurrah for Israel!”
Leaving was pretty tough, but look where we are now 😊 I love you so much, I will see you in less than 2 months!!!
Sista Bowen

P.S. Most of my companions and missionary friends have been from islands and have a hard time pronouncing "Sister Bowen" so they (along with all the missionaries in the mission) call me "Sista Boween" ❤😂)

(P.P.S All of my mission friends at home are dating each other and Sister Chappel is getting married in 4 days🙃🤔)

Sister Satame is so adorable. This is our favorite place to eat, its a mexicane restaurant, she loves ice cream.

She was SO excited to see a swimming pool and so we took a picture.

The Wonderful people here in Honolulu

Sister Satame and I continue to visit our wonderful people here in Honolulu and see miracles everyday. On Saturday we went to have dinner at one of our Chuukese members houses and as we were eating - Chuukese food might I add, Sister Satame was in heaven - she spotted Elder Fatiau and Elder Wardell walking. We called them over and we all talked for a while, then as they were getting ready to leave they told us there was a two keys family that lived next door that wanted to learn from us. So we stopped by and turns out it's sister Satames cousin, go figure. They invited us in and it was fun to watch Sister Satame in action as she testified and shared her favorite scripture I love being her companion and love the work going on here.

Today is mlc and it's weird not being add it. I really miss the trainings we got from president Bekker and the work that I did before training but I know how important training is and I know that the Lord will bless me as I do my best.

Fun facts about Sister Satame:
1. She loves this little red balloon she has and carries it everywhere. (see picture)
2. She loves her little digital alarm clock and carries it around with her. It periodically goes off.
3. She LOVES the cake Nana and Papa sent me which is impressive because she doesn't like anything.

We also had the head Navy coach who was in Meet the Mormons come and speak to us! He use to be in the McCully ward and talked about how important our names are. When we are baptized we take upon ourselves Christs name and that should mean a lot to us too. He sis a great job speaking.
I love how much I learn everyday and love my mission. I love you all too😊❤

Aloha

Ran Allim! - New Greenie

Today is our Preparation day because we got to go to the temple. Its always THE BEST to go to the temple and to take the drive up kaneohe side which is beautiful.😊

This week has been the beginning of what I know will be one of the most unique experiences of my entire life. I am so excited to be training and excited to be learning so much. I never thought I would have an opportunity like I have now and am grateful for the challenge as well as the growth. I have 2 months left to do everything I was called here to do and I know with a lot of prayer it can be the best 2 months of my whole mission.

Ready for a curveball? Tuesday morning Sister Paletasala and I took all her stuff to the Tabernacle and had a fun time talking with all the other missionaries who were gathering for transfers, to say goodbye to the missionaries leaving and to welcome the new missionaries. We helped the Assistants unload all the greenies bags the day before and it was understandable why transfer meeting started late, there were 20 new missionaries! They barley fit all of them in the Assistants car, Presidents car, the truck, and our greenie van because there were so many of them. When the Assistants and President finally came out of the room where all the greenies were waiting to be introduced to their trainers, President bee - lined it to me and very excitedly said, "Sister Bowen, I am so excited for you to be training, your missionary is Sister Satame. (He doesnt usually tell us before we meet them) She is Chuukese and from Chuuk! She is SO shy, she wont even look at anyone in the eyes and hardly speaks any English. I think you are going to be so perfect for her because you are just so bubbly and wonderful, Im so excited that she is here and that you are training her!" I laughed and thanked him and felt the confirmation from the spirit that she is who I needed to train. President announced her name later and she came out, and ever since then I have been doing everything I can to improve my Chuukese so I can communicate with her and working hard to introduce her to American life.

I have focused on working with the spirit to know when to correct Sister Satame and when to just smile and let things go. I expected things to be different from training Sister Nicholson and Sister Soga, and they most defintley are.

Right after transfer meeting I wanted to get right out and go to work because transfer meeting tends to take up a lot of time, so we headed straight to KPT (Government housing complex) and as we parked I noticed one of the people we are teaching, Willy, sitting outside. Sister Satame also looks up at where he is sitting and says, "*GASP* Uncle Willy!" I turned to her and said "What you know uncle Willy?" She hurrys over to him and speaks to his wife in Chuukese as I talked about the Book of Mormon with Willy and answered some of his questions. Turns out she LIVED at KPT before and knows EVERYONE. The first day we were together, she walked right up to a door and opened it, hahaha I slowly grabbed the door knob and pulled it shut then she looked at me and I motioned a knocking movement and she laughed and laughed and said sorry sorry (Obusara Obusara) hahaha. I think she feels very much at home here, which I am glad about.

We do language study for about an hour everyday and sometimes more because she needs it but it has been fun to learn as I did with Sister Soga (whos langauge study was a piece of cake compared to Sister Satame) what words she does and doesnt know and use the select vocabulary mixed with my broken Chuukese to explain everything to her. I asked the other day if she knew what the word Choose means and she said, "Ewer *makes slurping sounds* Juice." Hahaha I feel so blessed to have been raised speaking English. We were also reading PMG for langauge study and there was a paragraph where there were blanks ("I know as you read the Book of Mormon you will _______.) And she thought that was the funniest thing ever so we laughed about that for a while.

When I trained Sister Soga I learned that if you focus on figuring out what words a foreign speaker knows in English you can use there limited vocabualry to explain new words and add to their vocabulary. It takes time talking to them to eventually know exactly how to describe new things to them and explain what other people say in words they will understand. Its kindof like a puzzle and I love it. Ive formed a bond with both Sister Soga and Sister Satame that is what I would describe as true love. I think it goes even further than just for my foreign companions learning English too, we all have a language in a way, the way we feel and express ourselves and true love is understanding that language and speaking it. :) Sister Satame is actually very funny and very talkative. As we learn eachothers "words", the ones she understands in English and the ones I understand in Chuukese, we have a blast and a half. I cant wait to see what the next few weeks will bring. :)

Sister Satame has a lot of immediate family here and as strange as it is to teach a lesson to her sister, aunt, uncle etc. I know she was sent here for a reason, there is so much good she is going to do and I am praying every night that I can do my part as her trainer to help her learn to teach repentance by the spirit and baptize worthy converts.

Its has also been interesting to see what Sister Satame doesnt understand/like or what she really likes here in Hawaii. One thing she doesnt understand at all is all the homeless people living in tents in the park and sleeping on the sidewalk at night. She just cant fathom why they dont have homes and every time we see a homeless person (which there are a lot) pushing a shopping cart full of rubbish or living in a tent in a park full of tents she just GASPS loudly (Ive almost driven off the road a few times) and says "so sad so sad why they sleep there?" She also is very picky about her rice and LOVES our 4'11 Filipino District Leader, Elder Lidang.

Well thats about the extent of my week and Im sure there will be more stories to come until the end. I am excited to be coming home so soon and sad at the same time. But if I have learned anything from my mission it is that the Lords looking out for me and I should be excited for what he has in store for me in my next phase of life 😊

Thank you for the prayers, I feel a lot of strength and comfort knowing there are people at home cheering me on. 😊❤

I tong Ngenikemi and Aloooooha!

Baby number 3 coming at ya.

Aloha... or in the case of my very close friends Elder Bichsel, Elder Wills and Elder Porter, Aloha Oe.

I will be missing Elder Bischels Lord of the Rings references, and 2 of the greatest missionaries I've ever met, Elder Wills and Elder Porter, but I know they all have great things ahead of them and they have all left a big impression on me. I definitley more fully appreciate the short time I have left.

In other news...Im Pregnant!

Baby number 3 coming at ya.

Sister Paletasala will be transfering to Mililani to be an STL and I will be training a new missionary here in my beautiful area. I currently dont know anything about my new companion but I do know that she is going to love it here. I am humbled to have been called and hope I can do all I can to show her through example how miraculous being a missionary is.

This past week we had a return appointment with a girl that the McCully Elders had ran into biking a few weeks ago. We had taught one of the brothers and a sister that turned out to be a less active former seminary teacher last week and returned to see them again. Before we knew it we were introducing ourselves and teaching the whole corner housing complex because they all turned out to be related #hawaii. Sunday morning they ALL showed up at church. I am so grateful for how welcoming our ward was to the Primo family and for miracles that I witness like that everyday in this area.

The highlight of this week (If you didn't already know based off of Mermis Facebook) two of my very best friends here in Honolulu, Mermi and Charles, were baptized and confirmed Saturday and Sunday. It has been amazing to watch them over the past 3 transfers develope the faith and strength from the Atonement of Jesus Christ to overcome personal challenges and be a light for the rest of their family who werent attending church when I first came. Just as Dieter F. Uchtdorf perfectly said, "God will take you as you are at this very moment and begin to work with you. All you need is a willing heart, a desire to believe, and trust in the Lord." I know that is true, i witness it everyday and Ive felt it in my own life. My testimony is unshakable. I know this is Christ church on the earth and that he is my Savior. The Book of Mormon is true and it hurts me when people reject it because I know it can change their lives as it has changed mine.

Also Its going so fast, Im doing my best to make everyday count but youre right, its going to be hard when I come home, I sometimes wish I never loved as much as I have here❤❤

I love you (I tong Ngenuk
❤😊)

Aloha from the beautiful place we call a Mission field

Just in response to those who I want at the airport I most definitely want Nana and Papa at the airport for my homecomings well as the Pidcocks, Madison and them. 😊

This week was busy with exchanges, there are 3 sets of Kaneohe sisters but I only went to their area once, the other times I stayed in Honolulu with the new greenies to train them. I couldnt believe the house that 4 of the sisters get to stay in Kaneohe, I was in heaven, it was cabin style in the middle of what felt like Jurassic Park, give or take a few dinosaurs. I fell asleep listening to a river running nearby and could help but feel so much overwhelming gratitude for all that my Heavenly Father has blessed me with, boy am I blessed.

But there was also a lot of time to for me and Sister Paletasala to enjoy each other and visit people. We were just yesterday at one of the giant housing complexes trying to knock doors to find people interested in our message. The kids here in Hawaii are taught to lie to missionaries so every time we ask if a certain person is home they always give us a confused face and say "who is that? Nobody with that name lives here." Well we went to a door where we know two girls, Norma and Alma lives. We asked the little kid who answered the door if they were home and we could hear them inside talking very loudly. He goes "Whos that? They dont live here." Then Sister Paletasala just stands there and looks at the kid for a real long time and says, "then who's that in there?" The kid stands there silent for a few seconds and then he darts inside and Alma comes to the door a few seconds later. I cant even tell you how frustrating that is. 😬 But for the most part the kids here love us and we are constantly teaching impromptu lessons on the sidewalks, hallways of apartments, and in the parks to big groups of kids. It's a dream for me. 😁 I think thats why it makes me so sad when kids are taught to lie and avoid us 😔 BUT the work goes on, rapidly I might add. We have 2 more with dates this week, Brizelle (Lucys daughter) and Clairence!! Clairence is awesome, he still loves his pamphlets and its actually because of them that he now is preparing to be baptized! We went for a lesson and right when we started he said, "On the back of my pamphlets it always says "What Should I Do Now?" And it says I need to repent, go to church, and be baptized, so I guess I better do those things in order to change. We then had a great discussion about how being baptized now by someone holding the priesthood authority of God is what God wants, even if hes been baptized before. Im excited for him and all of those that have baptism dates to start their path to church membership, receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost and eventually going to the temple.  😊

Speaking of those with a baptism date, the Thomas family is doing great. We had a lesson on Saturday with them and played Gospel Jeopardy, and they are so smart, it makes me so proud. We are still trying to get their parents more involved (we want the whole family ti be baptized not just all the siblings) and this last lesson the mom and grandma sat in and Facebook Lived the whole game haha. Im famous now. Sister Plaetasala was also so sweet and took some pictures while we were playing. 😊 We have 2 - 3 lessons with them a week and at one of our other lessons the 6 year old, Daverlyn, was sitting next to me and staring at me for a while as I was teaching so after I finished what I was saying I turned and looked at her and she says in all seriousness, "You are so white." Then I just sat and looked at her and she looked at me and everybody just sat and stared at us and nobody said anything for a good 20 seconds, then her older sister Atsy reaches over and slaps her arms "Daverlyn you cant just say that!" Hahahaha I thought it was so funny. I really dont blame her, there are hardly any white people where she lives in Palolo. 😂

Sister Paletasala also cracked me up this week when her Samoan came out and she pointed to a big group of houses on a mountain and says, "whats the name of that village?" Haha so Samoan 😂❤ She is also teaching me how to hula and we Hula for morning excersize, kinda funny.
I love this work and all that I am learning. I love you all and would love to share with you a quote that Nana and Papa sent to me this week: "If you think you've blown God's plan for your life, rest assured my friend, you are not that powerful." Repentance is real, Jesus Christ is our Savior and missionary work is the greatest work for me and for you at home 😊

Aloha,
Sister Bowen

Astonished Beyond All Measure

Ran Allim Dad!!

Wolfcreek sounds great and Im glad everybody still likes the golfballs 😊🤙I cant believe the car died like that, that must have been so stressful, glad its fixed and glad all those kids werent stranded hahaha.

Also so glad to hear Jordan misses me haha, Im going to be home so soon...

But I want to jump right into 3 major miracles that happened this week. Tender Mercies happen everyday, every hour even, but the miracles we experienced this week were unbelievable.

Tuesday night Sister Paletasala and I were trying to visit one more person before going home at a huge house complex called KPT. It's full of Chuukese and Samoans and it takes about 15 minutes to get to the top of the building in the elevator because there are so many people constantly getting on and off. While we were waiting at the ground level for the elevator with 10+ other people, the elevator arrived and out pored at least 10 more people. It was hectic and as we were pushing through to get in, Sister Paletasala steps right in front of an older Aunty in the mids of all these people. She spoke to her in Samoan for a moments then Aunty looked at her name tag and they grabbed eachother in the biggest hug imaginable. I didnt know what was happening because I dont speak Samoan but it seemed kindof important so I took a picture (See Below). Turns out it was her grandmas sister! She hasent seen her since she was a baby! Sister Paletasala had asked if she knew her grandma because she said they look exactly alike. They talked for a few minutes in Samoan and then we set up a lunch appointment for Sunday and left "astonished beyond all measure." There is NO WAY that was just a conscience. The buildings are MASSIVE, theres 2 of them, I couldnt even find my own companion amids all the chaos let alone someone that looks like me grandma. From day 1 Sister Paletasala has been looking for her family here, and miraculously they were found. 😊 Their entire family is very strong Catholic and we were pretty nervous when we went for lunch Sunday afternoon. The first greeting we got when we walked up to the house was a dirty look from a younger Samoan lady and her husband, along with rolled eyes when we asked if Aunty was home. Everyone was much morr cordial once they found out she was family but they all left before we could share a message. One of the ladies (standing in the picture with us) opened up after our quick message on the plan of salvation. She told us the elders use to come around and teach all the little kids in the neighborhood where she grew up but stopped coming one day and she really missed them. She gave us her number (we didnt even have to ask her for it) and she told us they would be back from vacation on Aug. 8th and she wanted us to come back. DOUBLE MIRACLE. It was such an amazing experience. Im so grateful that Sister Paletasala was so in tune lwith the spirit that prompted her to ask Aunty if she knew her grandma. :)

Miracle 2 this week is WE SET ANOTHER PERSON WITH A BAPTISMAL DATE! The work here is amazing, we currently have 6 people with baptism dates, but this individual was particularly special. About 3 months ago I was on exchanges with one of the Honolulu West Zone sisters and we stopped by Clairences (The Uncle who loves his pamphlets) house to have a lesson with him. A 25-30 year old girl answered and said he wasnt home but she would love to learn from us. We sat right down and shared one of the most powerful Restoration lessons of my mission. She loved what we shared and even more loved the Kosrae Book of Mormon we gave her. After that lesson we never saw her again, until last Saturday! We were shocked to have her answer the door but she had us come right in and she went on and on about how thr Book of Mormon helps her when she is sad and how much her kids want to learn more from us too and how excited she was that the church was right down the street and she could walk. It was awesome! We talked about what the Book of Mormon is again with her and extended the baptismal date. She happily accepted. :)

Third miracle of the week begins with the story of two sad, broke sister missionaries. We were at the store Trying to figure out how we were going to buy everything we needed for this last week until we get money on our cards again, and a couple stopped us and introduced themselves as members from Kauai. They talked with us for a while about how they were on Oahu because their daughter was in the hospital. About 10 minutes after we had parted ways, they found us and gave us $30! We told them we couldnt take it, but they insisted. We couldnt believe it, that couple was heaven sent. Keep them in your prayers because they were an answer to ours.

Miracle 4 (1 extra because there were so many this week). Elder Wills use to serve in this branch and he is now serving in the Honolulu West Zone. There is also a family we have been trying to contact for MONTHS because Elder Wills said they were almost baptized, and he saw them at the store! He asked them when we could stop by and introduce ourselves and he set up an appointment for us. We visited her and she is amazing! She was happy to see us and its a miracle Elder Wills was the one to see her at the store because he is the only one who knows what she looks like. The Lord is so involved with this work it amazes me, Im so grateful to have experiences like these everyday.

Another lesson we had this week while on exchanges had me laughing for days. We are currently teaching a 9 year old boy named Sibo, hes an only child and very lonely, but loves when we teach him in a little play area by his apartment. Everytime we go he has a new little friend with him to learn and its always so funny to try to have a productive lesson with two 9 year olds. This last one Sibo starts by yelling across the park "See Curtis over there hes my best friend RIGHT WERE BEST FRIENDS??" and "Curtis go ask your mom if you can learn (*Curtis turns around and starts running home*) WAIT NO COME BACK THAT WILL TAKE TOO LONG." Then he scared us pretty bad when he tried to impress us by saying "I taught Curtis how to pray and we pray to Joseph Smith together." Of course we quickly cleared that up and then very simply retaught prophets.

We also had a great time at Pearl Harbor this week. 😁

I love teaching the Chuukese people because they are so humble and willing to listen. I am also so grateful to experience so many miracles.
Have a good week I love you
Sister Bowen

Laugh till Ya Cry

Aloha😙

Wolfcreek sounds like a blast as usual, I cant believe its been a year since I remember emailing about missing Wolfcreek, time flies and I still miss golf course walks, raquet ball, the pool with the yellow slide and the little valley market. :) Natalie is so cute, oh my goodness I think that is great. Who knows maybe she'll end up in Pittsburgh someday 😉

Yesterday we had dinner at the Bendixens (best senior missionary couple😍😭❤) with the APs: Elder Porter and Elder Fanene, and it was hands down the best dinner of my mission. As Elder Porter said as we left that night, "I literally have a headache because Ive been laughing so hard." I really enjoyed having dinner and just talking with some of the greatest people I know. We shared our most embarrasing stories from our mission. I will have to tell them (or have Elder Porter tell them because he is such a great story teller) when I return home but it was honestly one of the best memories of my mission, not to mention Sister Bendixen's cooking is A1.

We set two new people with baptism dates for August and I cant wait to see them and the Thomas family baptized. Mermi and her brother are in their early 20s and are working so hard to also activate their inactive family and the Thomas kids are still so smart, I love teaching them.

(( *UPDATE* Our missionary housing guy, Elder Williams, is really great and he has been taking care of some ridiculous problems with our apartment owner and paperwork for us. He just walked into where we are emailing and told us the owner "likened us to drug dealers" because "you just never know with two girls like them" hahahaha Elder Williams was so mad. ))

We had a lesson with one of our recent converts, Mercy, and I was trying so hard not to laugh/cry because as we were reading, her 4 year old grandkids were trying to open a jammed door behind us with a butter knife and cockroaches were crawling up the wall behind us. Their life here is so different then the kind I grew up with. But thank goodness for the gospel Because thats what we both have in common and its what really matters.

We had another exchange last week, Pearl Harbor service this week, another exchange on Friday, and gave talks in sacrament on scripture study. I testified that although family scripture study may require a lot of patience, IT WORKS. Thanks for your examples of that. :)

Well despite the busy week, bipolar weather, skipping dinners, and angry apartment guy, I never want to leave 😊

Aloha Nui Loa for all you sacrifice for me, and I Tong Ngenuk (I love you)
